Update on

ISO 9001:2026 and ISO 14001:2026

Home Services Online ISO Certification Management Latest update on ISO 90012026 and ISO 140012026

Will this apply to me?

If your business is certified to ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management) and/or ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management), significant changes are on the way. Both standards are currently being reviewed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), with updated versions set for release in 2026.

These revisions aim to enhance quality and environmental management systems, enabling businesses to better address emerging challenges such as digital transformation, sustainability, and risk resilience.

Updates 2026

What’s the timeline for change?

The updates to both ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 are both expected to be released in 2026:

ISO 9001: (Quality Management)

  • August 2025: Draft standard published

  • Mid-2026: Final draft standard expected to be published

  • Q3 or Q4 2026: New standard expected to be published

  • Transition deadline: (expected) 3 years; late 2029

ISO 14001: (Environmental Management)

  • June 2025: Draft standard published

  • Q4 2025: Final draft standard published

  • Q1 2026: New standard expected to be published

  • Transition deadline: (expected) 3 years; early 2029

As a global certification body with extensive QMS and EMS expertise, we provide end-to-end support for your ISO 9001:2026 and/or ISO 14001:2026 transition—including gap analyses, readiness audits, transition training, and full certification services once the standards are formally published.

What are the expected changes to the standards?

The precise details for changes to each standard will not be confirmed until their publication. We previously outlined several predictions in an earlier article, highlighting expected updates related to risk-based thinking, sustainability, and supply chain management.

Early summaries indicate that while few new requirements are expected, several sections may be clarified or reorganized to improve readability and ease of implementation:

ISO 9001:2026

ISO 14001:2026

Clause 3: Terms & Definitions

  • Certain QMS-specific terms may be incorporated directly into the standard, decreasing the need to reference ISO 9000.

Action: Review definitions once the draft standard is published.

Clause 4: Context of the Organisation

    • Minor refinements expected
    • Climate change considerations remain included from previous amendments

Action: Confirm that your current management system and business context analysis includes environmental influences.

Clause 5: Leadership

    • New emphasis on promoting quality culture, continual improvement and ethical behavior (though not formally defined)
    • Quality policy may be expected to reflect strategic direction and external context

Action: begin reviewing quality culture practices and top-level messaging.

Clause 6: Planning

    • Risks and opportunities may be restructured into separate clearer sub-clauses
    • Additional clarity anticipated in guidance notes (Annex A)

Action: revisit how risks and opportunities are distinguished and addressed in planning.

Clause 7: Support

    • Text restructuring is likely, with few substantive requirement changes
    • New awareness requirements may include understanding quality culture and ethics

Action: prepare to refresh awareness training if needed.

Clause 8: Operation

    • Minimal changes anticipated, though terminology and clause layout may be updated

Action: ensure traceability to updated clause references in future documentation

Clause 9: Performance Evaluation

    • Mostly consistent with the 2015 version
    • Expectations for detection of quality trends and performance outcomes remain relevant

Action: confirm audit objectives and review criteria to reflect new clause framing.

Clause 10: Improvement

    • Additional guidance on continual improvement incorporated, especially as linked to Clause 5 leadership expectations

Action: consider documenting how leadership influences improvement cycles.

Clause 3: Terms & Definitions

  • Standard keeps the Annex SL framework for easy integration with other ISO standards.
  • Language modernised: Fulfil obligations → Meet compliance obligations
  • Stronger clarity on records vs. documented information

Action: none.

Clause 4: Context of the Organisation

    • Environmental conditions (e.g. climate change, pollution, biodiversity) must now be explicitly considered
    • EMS scope must reflect a life cycle approach
    • Key documents must be “available as documented information”

Action: update context analysis, stakeholder maps and scope definition.

Clause 5: Leadership

    • Updated terminology: “meet compliance obligations” replaces “fulfil”
    • Greater emphasis on conserving natural resources and ecosystem protection

Action: revise your environmental policy and ensure executive engagement.

Clause 6: Planning

    • Clause 6.3 (New): requires a structured approach to EMS-related change management
    • Emergency situations are now separated from abnormal operations
    • Planning is split into:
      • 6.1.4: identify risks and opportunities
      • 6.1.5: plan actions accordingly

Action: refresh risk registers, aspect-impact evaluations and planning documentation.

Clause 7: Support

    • Terminology now standardized: all EMS records must be “available as documented information”
    • Communication must empower employees to contribute to continual improvement

Action: review communication and training processes.

Clause 8: Operation

    • “Outsourced processes” now referred to as “externally provided processes, products or services”
    • Operational control must extend to suppliers and partners
    • Emergency preparedness must align with risk planning (Clause 6.1.2)

Action: strengthen supplier management and emergency planning

Clause 9: Performance Evaluation

    • Explicit requirement to evaluate environmental performance and EMS effectiveness
    • Internal audits must define objectives, in addition to scope and criteria
    • Management reviews are restructured into three sub-clauses: inputs, process and results

Action: update internal audit and management review processes

Clause 10: Improvement

    • Clause 10.1 removed – its content is now integrated into 10.2 and 10.3
    • More structured approach to nonconformity and corrective action
    • Clear linkage between Clause 9 findings and continual improvement

Action: strengthen root cause analysis and improvement tracking.

What should I do now?

Getting ahead now will put you in a stronger position. Here’s why early preparation matters and how you can start today:

High Demand for Consultancy
Whenever core ISO standards are updated, consultancy and audit slots fill up quickly. With the number of businesses needing to transition, the demand for consultants and auditors will be even greater. Starting early gives you more options, better support, and reduces stress.

What you can do now: Set internal reminders for key dates and stay subscribed to updates so you’re prepared as soon as the standards are released.

Early Preparation Reduces Stress Later
Getting started early allows you to train your team, update documentation, and make system adjustments gradually, instead of scrambling at the last minute.

What you can do now: Begin reviewing your current systems, designate a transition lead, and identify areas that will likely need updates, particularly around risk, sustainability, and training.

Missing the Deadline Will Impact Your Certification
Missing the transition deadline can affect your certification status and potentially disrupt business operations.

What you can do now: Build awareness within your team. Share the expected timelines, assign responsibilities, and ensure leadership understands the importance of timely action once the updated standards are published.
